Dr. Alex Ryan will run Common Risk Management Framework Workshop in Edmonton, Canada - 24-26 October 2013

Dr. Alex Ryan will run Common Risk Management Framework Workshop in Edmonton, Canada - 24-26 October 2013.
The workshop will bring together 25 stakeholders in the upstream energy sector (Government of Alberta, regulators, industry associations, NGOs, Métis and First Nations) to collaboratively envision a risk management system for the upstream, oil, gas, coal, and bitumen activities that supports and improves the achievement of outcomes for Albertans. A systemic design methodology will be used to reframe the risk management approach and develop prototypes for a new risk management framework.

Dr. Alex Ryan will run Systemic Integrated Adaptation Synthesis Workshop in Utrecht - 15-16 October 2013

Dr. Alex Ryan will run Systemic Integrated Adaptation Synthesis Workshop in Utrecht on 15-16 October 2013.
The workshop will focus on integrating field research collected from Political, Economic, Social, and Environmental perspectives on how small holder farmers in Ghana can sustainably and equitably improve their food security and livelihoods in a changing environment. A systemic design approach will be pursued in order to synthesize the four lenses into a coherent framework for systemic integrated adaptation.

RSD2 Symposium - 09-11 October 2013

We are pleased to announce that the Relating Systems Thinking and Design 2 (RSD2) Symposium will take place on 09 to 11 October 2013. The program has been finalized. In addition to the presentations seven workshop sessions will take place.

The Symposium was initiated by OCEAN member Birger Sevaldson as an integral part of his research and teaching in Systems Oriented Design at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. Systems Oriented Design is a research area in OCEAN and has benefitted greatly from its origin within concept development in OCEAN throughout the first decade of its existence.

The registration for participation is now open. Please register on the symposium website.

Symposium website: www.systemic-design.net

Systems Oriented Design: www.systemsorientedesign.net

The Symposium is for free but there are limited seats available.

OCEAN members collaborate in maritime research project

OCEAN members Natasha Barrett and Birger Sevaldson are involved in the maritime research project at Oslo School of Architecture and Design. The research project is financed by the Norwegian Research Council, with the Ulstein Ship builder as the main partner.

The project application was prepared by Birger Sevaldson and others and the project was initially lead by him. The lead was subsequently transferred to Kjetil Nordby who has developed the project greatly and run by him with an extensive group of researchers, PhD fellows, designers and programmers. Birger Sevaldson is contributing as a senior researcher in the project.

The project has created a significant amount of media attention in Norway and internationally.

One of the theoretical pillars in the project is Systems Oriented Design (SOD). SOD is also one of the research activities in OCEAN where it was developed and emerged out of the early concept developments in OCEAN and the discussions around the Dynamic Generative Diagram. SOD is looking at an active expansion and its practice is migrating to several design companies at the moment, amongst them HALOGEN (www.halogen.no)

Natasha Barrett has worked with research on sound design for the ship bridge in the UBC project. We are pleased that for the first time a musical composer has been involved with sound design for a ship bridge. OCEAN is a interdisciplinary network, that emphasizes inter- and trans-disciplinary work and this is one of the best examples of the potential of such networking collaboration.

Here is a video with a popularized vision of what the group is working with:

The Changing Shape of Practice - Integrating Research and Design in Architectural Practice Symposium at Chalmers University, Gothenburg - 20 September 2013

The Changing Shape of Practice - Integrating Research and Design in Architectural Practice International Symposium wil, take place at Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden on 20 September 2013.

Architectural practices worldwide have to deal with increasingly complex design requirements. How do practices acquire the ability to do so? This one-day symposium will focus on the increasing integration of research undertaken in architectural practices of different sizes all over the world.

Participating Offices: Kieran Timberlake (US), Foster & Partners (UK), 3xN (DK), Helen & Hard (NO), White (SE)

The symposium is jointly organized by the research environment ‘Architecture in the Making’ at Chalmers Architecture, RCAT Research Centre of Architecture and Tectonics at  AHO – Oslo School of Architecture and Design, OCEAN Design Research Association, and the Swedish Association of Architects.
